Recent Congress Plaza Hotel Review: "An ideal location for exploring Chicago on foot and by "el." We just left the car in the parking garage (next door) the whole time. (The price is reasonable for a downtown parking location. You have the option of taking the car in and out of the parking garage if you want to.). The hotel has a nice lobby area and a helpful staff. We never tried the in-house restaurant since there are many other interesting options nearby. This is a classy, older hotel - it was nice to see it being kept up so well. Considering the central location the price seemed quite reasonable (although this varies so check!). For us, having a clean, well maintained place with all the major conveniences at a reasonable price was much more important than super deluxe furniture or bedding or whatever it is that drives the price of so many downtown hotels out of sight.
A few doors up Michigan Ave from the hotel is the Chicago Architecture Foundation which offers a great walking tour of the older skyscrapers in the Loop (among many other tours). This was a delightful way to be introduced to Chicago's architectural history.
Only one complaint: extra cost for internet in the room (about $10 a day) - while I appreciate the hotel's efforts to preserve the glories of the past, this is one "old fashioned" leftover that should be eliminated! (There was free wireless in the lobby, which made it a popular place to hang out)."
