Recent Congress Plaza Review: "I read the reviews and took a chance, it paid off!! The hotel is located right across the street from Grant Park, a short walk away to see the light and water show at Buckingham Fountain and a safe walk home at night. A nice morning walk away from Museum Campus and an affordable taxi to Museum of Science on 57th or Hancock Observatory. The union on strike does not bother any one. Our room was on the 11th floor and it was comfortable and quiet, (one thing, if you plan on staying in your room past 9:00 am put the Do Not Disturb Sign because cleaning comes around early). The bathrooms have been renovated and a new 32" flatscreen TV was great. We weren't lucky enough to get a lakefront view, for $20. a night extra you may get one. We saved the money for taxis. There's a gift shop if you need anything, a nice restaurant and a tavern. The kids liked the game room with old fashioned pinballs. The kids didn't miss a pool because they could get wet at Millenia Park, a couple of blocks away."

The hotel is nice. You can stay there for a few nights. The room was big and the bed very comfortable. The bathroom could have been cleaner. We found a few hair, that were not ours.

A once-glorious hotel sadly down on its luck. Unbeatable views from the Michigan Avenue side, terrific location, but a neglected and undermaintained property that seems to have an cavernous aura of excess capacity. If you can get past the different-decades variety of signage, decor, and ambiance, overlook the last five quickly done paint jobs (so many that the bathroom door wouldn't close) and the shower curtains on tension rods (really? Even the Red Roof Inn does better), and look beyond the many different layers of signage and traces of old floor plans, you can still sense the glories of days gone by -- stunning mosaic work in the main lobby, arched windows in the top floors looking out on Buckingham Fountain by night and the blue expanse of Lake Michigan by day. The Auditorium Building (next door), a seeming refugee from the theater district further north, is in fact a vibrant cultural center and a good place to be near. The in-house restaurants leave a little to be desired, and the once smoky Tavern Tap has been cleaned up to resemble nothing so much as the local Elks club -- with weirdly blocked-off doors that no longer allow you out onto Congress Street. Good value -- but someday, given its superb location and commanding views, the Congress Plaza will be a much better (and more expensive) place to say. If your business in Chicago means you'll be spending a bit of time in your room, the lakefront suites are worth the extra money.

Hotel was nice and hotel bar was pretty fun. Internet costs $10 and was the only frustrating issue.

Standard room was huge with a walk-in closet. From what we saw should be higher than a 2 1/2 stars.

The Congress seemed a little old and had some wear but is still a nice place to stay. It is located right across from the parks area and if you luck out with a room on the east side, probably have a great view (unfortunately we did not). The staff was friendly and our 2-day stay went well. The only concerns I had were that for certain room locations, a trip to the ice machine becomes a day long journey, and secondly, for a hotel of their stature, the lack of wireless internet in the rooms is pretty inconvenient. They allow you to buy wireless access but it is only available in the public lobby area. That is the one downfall of an otherwise nice hotel. I might stay here again but would look for other options first. Also: If you have a car, the nearest parking garage charges almost $30 a day so be prepared to add that to your budget.

It is an old hotel. Has not been renovated. The hallways are dark and a bit smelly, and the bathrooms are old with no counter space for your personals. But it is comfortable enough and clean. For the price you pay in downtown Chicago, it is worth it.

Its definitely a 2 star hotel, but at a 4 star price. The location of the hotel attributes to this increase in price. The rooms are VERY VERY small. We had only the bed in our room and there room for NOTHING else. Very hard to walk around the bed to get to the front door. The windows for the room were very small (makes you feel like you're in one of those old warehouses). The place definitely has character and what not, but as far as comfort and value of price, definitely NOT worth it. But if you're looking for a place to just rest your head and walk to Millenium park, then you are set. As for parking, look for a different place to park. The place that they give you that is 24 hour parking (its not really 24 hour parking, its just parking until you check out). But the place clearly says you are paying for 24 hour parking. So i would NEVER park there again. Anyway overall can't hate it too much, it could be worse. And it definitely added to the experience of the whole trip (experience being don't stay there again..haha).
