Recent Palmer House Hilton Review: "I had booked a room here for a foreign guest, aiming to make his stay in Chicago a memorable and pleasant one. This is one of the grand hotels in America, and it deserves that title. The lobby is stunning, and a great relief from the usual sterile lobbies of most first rate hotels. The check-in process was smooth and fast. The room was extremely comfortable. The view left something to be desired, since it was an inside room with a view of another wall of the hotel. But for the reasonable price, that can be overlooked. The hotel was unexpectedly crowded. My guest's stay was over the Thanksgiving period, and this meant that the hotel was host to a tradition that I did not know about. Suburban families book into the hotel the day before Thanksgiving so that the kids can go down to State Street to watch the Thanksgiving parade. When that is done, they come back up and have a full set Thanksgiving dinner (beginning at 12 and going until 5), Many of the families leave the next morning, but some stay over the weekend. The kids go swimming and the parents go to the health club. As a result of the unusual crowd, the lobby was very busy and eating in the hotel became a problem. But this was not a big problem because there are good restaurants in the immediate area. My guest ate his breakfasts in his room and was pleased with them. The hotel is two blocks away from the Art Institute and ice skating in Grant Park and only a few blocks from major shopping, the Puiblic Library, live theater, the Auditorium Theater, Lyric Opera, etc. The Field Museum, the Aquarium, and the Planetarium are a long walk or a short cab ride away. And the El is right outside the east door and the subway at the west door, if anyone wants to use them to go anywhere in the city, to the airports, etc. The subway has two lines, including the Blue Line, which gets you to or from O'Hare in about 40 minutes."
